Windows That Brighten & Warm The House
Shorter, wider eco-friendly windows play an important part in the heating and cooling process of the home. Their spacious size allows additional light to enter, brightening and warming the house. An overhang above south-facing windows offers shading from the direct sun during the high heat of summer.
Shorter, Wider & More Light
Shortening the window allows you to shade them more efficiently while widening the window makes them more spacious. On the south side of the house, the side that faces south and has the sun coming in morning and afternoon, we've built an overhang to shade the windows from the intensity of the sun. Yet the shorter, wider windows offer more light into the room itself.
Solar Heat Gain In WinterBy facing the home south, you'll take advantage of the passive solar heat gain during the winter. During the wintertime an energy-efficient house will heat just with the sun providing the house has over 70% of its windows on the south side of the home which this sustainable sited house has.
About Low-E Argon Windows
There is a thin, transparent coating on the windows made from metal, metallic oxide or plastic to reflect inside heat or coolness back to the interior. The spacing between panes has an inert gas such as argon.

How Low-E Argon Windows Work
Low E argon windows work primarily by reflecting heat which would otherwise be wasted back into the room in question. Because it contains argon, the window is significantly better at reflecting heat rather than conducting heat, and consequently keeps the heat in, and keeps the unwanted heat out.
